The 2024 season comes to a close with one last major hurdle on the ATP Tour – the Nitto ATP Finals. All season long, players have competed in the PIF ATP Race to Turin in order to gain enough points to one of the top eight players that qualify.
This year’s event is missing one key player, and that is Novak Djokovic, who also happens to be the defending champion. Djokovic announced on his Instagram just a few days ago that due to an ongoing injury, he would not be able to play but otherwise felt honored that he could qualify. In more news, this will be the first time that not one of the Big Three will be competing in the ATP Finals in 23 years. The Big Three traditionally refers to Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
In the Ilie Nastase Group is Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz and Alex De Minaur. After a strong 2024, Jannik Sinner is looking to avenge his loss to Djokovic in last year’s final on his home turf. Medvedev is seeking his second ATP Finals title after winning it in 2020. After winning titles in Eastbourne and Delray Beach, Fritz will be competing to get out of the group stages for a chance to win his third title of 2024. This will be a first-time finals appearance for De Minaur who also made his top ten debut earlier this summer.
The Joh Newcombe Group will be comprised of Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev. Zverev has performed well at previous ATP Finals. He will be looking to nab his third title there. Sinner was not the only player out of the eight to have a strong year. Alcaraz took home the French Open and Wimbledon titles and sits right behind Sinner in the rankings. Similarly to Fritz, Ruud won two titles in Geneva and Barcelona. Both, however, were on clay, so Ruud will look to see if he can end his season with a hard court title. Rublev was able to qualify ninth with the withdrawal of Djokovic; this will be his fifth ATP Finals appearance.
Four of the eight players have played the Giorgio Armani Tennis Classic. Those players include Ruud (2022, 2023), Zverev (2023), Alcaraz (2022, 2023) and Medvedev (2024).
The Nitto ATP Finals run through November 10-17 at the Inalpi Arena in Turin, Italy. Group stages will kick-off first with the semifinals to be played on November 16 and the finals on Sunday.
